On Sept. 26, in honor of Mesothelioma Awareness Day, The Mesothelioma Center at Asbestos.com is reflecting on the work we’ve done in our community this past year.
Doctors diagnose more than 3,000 mesothelioma cancer cases in the United States every year. Last year, The Mesothelioma Center helped more than 1,450 patients and families find the medical care and support they needed.
As patients and families come together to support the mesothelioma community, our Patient Advocates know there is always more to do.
Patient Advocates Provide Help for Everyone
Mesothelioma Awareness Day is a time when patients and families can share what they’ve learned with others in the community. Mesothelioma is only about 1% as common as lung cancer, and many patients may not know what options they have.
Our Patient Advocates are committed to helping patients, families and anyone else affected by asbestos exposure and related disease. They have varied backgrounds of specialized experience and are prepared to handle all types of cases.
Every day, our Patient Advocates work to connect people to mesothelioma resources such as specialists, treatment facilities, clinical trials, support groups and more.
In the past year, we’ve helped almost 200 mesothelioma patients access the best treatment options available by scheduling appointments, finding eligible clinical trials and putting patients in touch with doctors in their area.
Since last year’s Mesothelioma Awareness Day, more than 600 patients have connected with our on-staff medical doctor and registered nurse.
Our team also includes a former U.S. Army captain who served nine years in leadership, combat and strategic training. Roughly 30% of mesothelioma patients are veterans, and having access to a VA-accredited claims agent can make all the difference when filing claims and understanding benefits.
Mesothelioma Center Reflects on Year’s Achievements
Mesothelioma patients and their families should have access to the best treatment options and support resources available. Over the past year, our support group enrolled more than 100 new mesothelioma patients and their caregivers.
Support groups help patients, caregivers and family members learn about coping with mesothelioma and enable them to share their stories with others. Members of the support group also have access to professional guidance from our mental health counselor, who helps participants overcome stressful obstacles while dealing with their disease.
Additionally, The Mesothelioma Center helped hundreds of people in the last year gain access to financial support for mesothelioma patients, such as discounted medical care, travel compensation and treatment grants.
We’ve also held two informational webinars in 2020 for mesothelioma patients, covering topics such as COVID-19 precautions and the latest in immunotherapy drugs and access. Plus, every year, we’re proud to donate funds to mesothelioma research and community driven mesothelioma events such as Miles for Meso.
Year after year, our goal is to increase awareness of this rare and debilitating disease while providing hope to everyone affected by asbestos-related illnesses. It’s important to remember that you have options, and with a little help, you can find them.
The Mesothelioma Center will continue working toward a future where patients have a better mesothelioma prognosis and longer survival times. As a community, we can make progress together. Whether you’re a patient, caregiver, family or friend, remember that you’re never alone.
This year and next, we’re here to help.
