Does mistletoe treatment aid long-term mesothelioma survival?

A pleural mesothelioma patient from Germany has survived more than four years solely with mistletoe treatment. As a result, mesothelioma researchers are now hoping to study more compounds extracted from mistletoe. We frequently write about alternative and complementary treatments for mesothelioma. We even feature mistletoe treatment on our Asbestos Treatments page – which you can find here. What treatments are currently available for mesothelioma? There are a number of treatment options available although, sadly, there is currently no cure for the condition. Surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy can all offer patients a good quality of life for a number of years. However, new research suggest that long-term mesothelioma survival may be possible without these treatments, using an alternative derived from the European mistletoe plant. What does mistletoe treatment do? The treatment is administered via injection and is said to:
  • Stimulate the immune system.
  • Induce self-destruction of cancer cells.
  • Protect DNA in healthy cells from toxins. For example, it can reduce the damage to healthy cells during chemotherapy.
  • Induce a mild fever. This is often welcome to cancer patients who have trouble keeping warm.
The study: On average, pleural mesothelioma patients survive for less than 18 months. A 64-year-old chose to take part in a study after she was diagnosed with stage III pleural mesothelioma. She opted not to have invasive surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. Instead, she was treated with a combination of VAE and an extract HNE, from another plant, Helleborous niger, or Christmas Rose, that has also proven to be toxic to cancer cells. The results: The author of the study, Paul G Werthmann, wrote: “After six weeks’ treatment, the pleural and nodal malignant pleural mesothelioma manifestations were reduced by about 15%. Subsequent tumour growth was slow and the patient remained in good health, enabling her to remain physically active until shortly before her death 56 months after the initial diagnosis.” Further benefits of mistletoe extract: Many mesothelioma patients who have used mistletoe treatment have reported feeling stronger, having higher resistance to infection, having an increased appetite and returning to normal sleep patterns. There do not appear to be any negative side-effects to this treatment. This is in contrast to chemotherapy where patients can suffer a number of side-effects which negatively impact upon their quality of life. Further research: Further research is needed to see whether mistletoe is a suitable treatment for mesothelioma on its own, or whether it should continue to be used with other treatments.
