Danielle Smalley’s Successful Mesothelioma Operation Gives Hope

In December 2017, we wrote an article about Danielle Smalley which you can read here. Danielle was tragically diagnosed with mesothelioma at the age of just 23. She is only the third person under-25 who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma in the last nine years. Experts believe that Danielle ingested asbestos as a child. However, asbestos has not been found at at her former school, and there is no evidence of her parents being exposed. The asbestos exposure ultimately caused Danielle to develop mesothelioma of the lining of the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma). When we reported on the case previously, Danielle was due to undergo surgery followed by heated chemotherapy. That surgery has now taken place with amazing results.

Life-saving Surgery:

Danielle underwent a 10 hour operation which involved the removal of her stomach lining and the rearrangement of her bowel. The surgeons also filled her abdominal cavity with heated chemotherapy drugs three times. These drugs washed her organs and killed any remaining cancer cells. Furthermore, the surgeons moved her ovaries further back into her body, which may mean that she will be able to have children in the future.

Recovering at Home:

Danielle is now at home and is slowly building up her appetite. The doctors have confirmed that she is now cancer-free. Whilst she will continue to have yearly check-ups, she is now looking at a much brighter future. We could not be happier for her. For most cases of mesothelioma there is no cure and treatment focused on extending life and managing symptoms. Danielle’s positive outcome continues to amaze doctors and is a beacon of hope for others suffering from this awful disease.
